A powerhouse in the factory
supported Chrysler organization, Norm Nelson Automotive won
the USAC Stock Car Owner
Championship
seven times from 1963-1970, fielding cars for top drivers like
Roger McCluskey, Jim Hurtubise,
Lloyd Ruby, A.J. Foyt and Paul Goldsmith.
A three time USAC Stock Car National Champion himself with 35 wins to his
credit, Norm Nelson raced
a Plymouth Road Runner in select 1970 races
finishing in 2nd behind teammate Roger McCluskey earning the team the
prestigious numbers
#1 and #2 for the following year.
The #2 Superbird was one of Norm Nelson's favorite race cars. In a career
dating back to 1940,
Nelson finished his final season as a driver in 1974 in
style, just missing his fourth USAC title by 26 points and ending up third
on the all-time USAC win list.
