1964 Corvette Grand Sport Roadster
George Wintersteen Pre-Race Car

Only two Roadsters were ever built, and both
had been sold to Penske; chassis 002, however, had never left GM.
Penkse arranged for George Wintersteen to personally pick up his
new Roadster at the factory in Warren, Michigan.

1966 Corvette Grand Sport Roadster
George Wintersteen

Wintersteen bought Grand Sport chassis 002 from Roger Penske
and picked up his Roadster after the 1966 Sebring race.
The Wintersteen Roadster was immediately updated by
Traco with a 427 ci engine equipped with a single Holley carburetor.

1964 Corvette Grand Sport Coupe
1964 Road America 500
Drivers : Roger Penske, Jim Hall, Hap Sharp

When the Jim Hall/Roger Penske Corvette Grand Sport Coupe appeared at the Road America 500 in September 1964 it was a complete surprise to everyone, including the Chaparral team who had entered it at the very last minute. It was only when the second Chaparral 2 could not be readied in time that the Grand Sport, chassis 005, was pulled out of Roger Penske's shop and substituted
for the Chaparral as the teams second race entry.

Jim Hall, Hap Sharp, and Roger Penske each took turns driving the Chaparral
and the Grand Sport during the course of the race. Numerous battles with
the eventual race winning Mecom Ferrari 250 LM and Ken Miles' Cobra
made for an exciting event.
The trio drove the Corvette to a hard fought third place finish overall.

1963 Corvette Grand Sport Coupe
Nassau Speed Week Driven by Dick Thompson

All three Corvette Grand Sport Coupes raced in the 1963 Nassau
Speed Week, entered by Mecom Racing, were painted Cadillac Blue.
Each had a different color hood stripe for instant recognition from the pits.

This Grand Sport, chassis 005, was driven in all of the 1963 Nassau
Speed Week events by the man who had the most experience driving
these cars, Dr. Dick Thompson. Car #80, had a red stripe on the nose
and the number targets were outlined in black.

Thompson finished second in the five lap Tourist Trophy GT qualifying race,
but failed to make it through the main event due to an overheating
differential. External oil coolers were installed on the rear deck to
solve this problem and Thompson went on to a 6th place classification
in the Governor's Cup and a 4th place finish in the Nassau Trophy races.
